The team here at the DESMOND National Office would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
2011 has been another busy year at the DESMOND National Office, not only have we moved into temporary accommodation whilst our hosting organisation, 'The Leicester Diabetes Centre', is being renovated and should be ready in time for Spring 2012, but we have seen some major developments in the wider DESMOND world taking place.
This year we delivered our first training in Australia, where we trained 12 Educators in Perth, Western Australia http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/360.html .
We have seen our prevention module, Walking Away from Diabetes, continue to be taken on by health organisations across the UK and Ireland http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/walkingaway-280.html.
The structure of our Educator Training has gone through a serious overhaul, as part of our continual development process, and has seen the introduction of our DESMOND Core Training day, designed to give anyone an insight into what makes a successful structured education programme. http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/desmondtrainingdates-308.html
At the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference, the DESMOND Programme saw the largest number of DESMOND-related poster presentations being accepted, than in any other year previously. http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/357.html
2011 has seen more new health organisations coming on board with our Newly Diagnosed and Foundation modules, and also our Walking Away from Diabetes module. Plus local DESMOND sites have continued to fight to ensure the future of DESMOND modules in their organisations, by ensuring there is an understanding of its importance in the journey of patients at risk or with Type 2 Diabetes. Some organisations have even gaining national recognition for all their hard work http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/362.html
Marian Carey & Heather Daly presented the findings from our 'A Safer Ramadan' pilot at the International Diabetes Federation conference in Dubai, with a resounding amount of interest from organisations across the world. Organisations are already signing up to take this on. If you would like to express an interest in this module please contact alison.harding@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or to find out some more about the pilot please follow http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/342.html More details about this module will follow in the New Year
As you can see the DESMOND Programme continues to go from strength to strength and 2012 looks set to be no different. We have already received fantastic news that the Lay Educator study results has been accepted for a presentation at the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference 2012 in Glasgow. And we are also going to be conducting an early adopter pilot for Lay Educators, to gain a clearer knowledge for best practice, before we begin to implement a national roll-out later in the year.
So here is to 2012! Once again we wish you all a Merry Christmas and we look forward to continuing our work with you all in the New Year!
