Let's Prevent is a research study funded by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) programme grant. What is this study about? Let's Prevent is the first randomised controlled study looking at whether an education and lifestyle programme (of diet and exercise) can prevent those with a condition called pre-diabetes going on to develop diabetes.
DESMOND was never intended to be delivered as a one-off session. The DESMOND Ongoing Study is looking at the effectiveness of providing further support and education to people who have already attended the Foundation patient course. As part of the study a new education programme, Going Forward with Diabetes, has been developed by the DESMOND curriculum and training team. Going Forward with Diabetes has been piloted by a team of Educators from Leicestershire and Northamptonshire who have been trained in its delivery.
The aim of the DESMOND Lay Educator study was to determine whether, with appropriate selection, training and support, lay people, trained as DESMOND Educators, could together with a Healthcare Professional partner, deliver structured self management education with the same degree of intervention fidelity, quality and efficacy as trained Healthcare Professional Educators.
