How to become a DESMOND Educator 

Training Educators

Having heard of DESMOND, have you ever thought about training to become a DESMOND Educator? Would you like to provide your patients with the best start they deserve in self-managing their diabetes? Becoming a DESMOND Educator couldn’t be easier…


 

Eligibility to become a DESMOND Educator

 

There are a number of criteria, which must be met by those wishing to train as DESMONDEducators. It is the responsibility of the PCT/Health Board/ health organisationrecommending candidates for training to ensure their potential Educators are eligible to come forward for training, and that they fulfil the necessary criteria as set out below.

 

Criteria for becoming a DESMOND educator

 

A DESMOND Educator must be:

 

EITHER a registered health care professional who is:

 

  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of diabetes
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to being a reflective practitioner

OR  a non-registered health care professional who:

 

  • Is employed by an NHS organisation as a member of a diabetes care team in a clinical or educational role, in which there is at least one accreditedDESMOND registered healthcare professional (HCP) Educator to provide mentorship
  • Will deliver DESMOND sessions with a DESMOND accredited, registered healthcare professional Educator at all times.

 

If you are unsure if your non-registered HCP is eligible for training, please forward a job description to the DESMOND National Office.

 

A DESMOND Educator must have:

 

  • Experience of working with people with diabetes
  • Commitment to the DESMOND philosophy and principles

 

A DESMOND Educator must be prepared to: 

 

  • Attend the two-day formal training course
  • Deliver the DESMOND Newly Diagnosed/Foundation Programme according to the formal Curriculum and using the designated resources as described in Educator training
  • Undergo Quality Development as detailed in the ‘QD Pathway’ (available from DESMOND National Office)
  • Attend an Educators’ regional study day as part of quality development and ongoing professional development once every three years
  • Maintain competency by delivering a minimum of 5 DESMOND courses a year.

 

It is desirable, but not essential, for a DESMOND Educator to have experience of group working. 

 

To Summarise the DESMOND philosophy and principles 

 

DESMOND programmes are developed to assist people with Type 2 diabetes to:

 

  • Reflect on their current thoughts and feelings about their diabetes and its impact on their lives
  • Actively consider the health risks they face 
  • Work towards setting realistic short-term behavioural goals for themselves

 

To this end the programmes are interactive and non-didactic, and the Educators are trained to have an impact on the process of reflection as well as providing content information

 

Support for Educators

 

The DESMOND Programme provides and facilitates support to Educators through the Quality Development Programme and by organising opportunities for training and networking between groups of Educators in the regions. However, it is important to realise that fulfilling some of the above criteria also depends on Educators having the support of their manager and their service, as well as that of the PCT/health organisation.

 

For this reason, we ask for an appropriate manager’s endorsement of an Educator’s request for training via the booking form
