Calling all lay people with an interest in diabetes…
the DESMOND Programme needs you!

How would like to become a trained DESMOND Educator? Do you live in Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Peterborough, Leicester and West Lothian? If the answer to both those questions is Yes! Then we are looking for you!

This is your chance to join a new research study investigating whether or not lay people can be trained to successfully deliver a group self management education programme alongside health care professional partners.

We want to recruit people in the particular areas mentioned above who have an interest in diabetes, are not employed in diabetes care, and are willing to commit to approximately 15 days paid work during the period 2008-2010. We will be providing first class training and mentoring, and resources to support self-study.

Our study will involve the DESMOND newly diagnosed programme, and the health care professional partners will be trained DESMOND Educators. In Leicester and Peterborough, we will be working specifically in the South Asian communities.

If you are interested in finding out more about the study then please contact Panna Mandalia or Dr Marian Carey on (0116) 2587290 or email Panna Mandalia at panna.mandalia@uhl-tr.nhs.uk.

Monitoring for success – how research is helping patients take control

New and exciting DESMOND research will get underway in May this year when the DESMOND self-monitoring study begins. The study, funded by Diabetes UK, will be comparing the effectiveness of urine and blood monitoring on glycaemic control when monitoring skills are part of a structured education programme – in this case, the DESMOND programme.
